Kathryn's background as a digital motion artist working in television and film has given her a strong understanding of colour, composition and design.
When planning a painting Kathryn uses photoshop to layer up colours, lights and digital imagery to create an initial composition before starting the canvas. This enables her to edit colours, sizes, rotation of elements and shapes into compositions quite freely before commiting to paint. Inevitably once a painting is started it will take over and form its own journey.
Kathryn likes to work in layers of strong coloured paint, experimenting with scraping back layers to give the illusion of translucency. She likes to vary the consistency and application of the paint, using knives, squeegees, brushes, masks, dripping, pouring to create the desired effect. She loves to work in strong colours exploring the relationships between colour opposites, both in thick bold layers of oil and thin translucent glazes.
"I want people to want to touch my paintings. I love to paint from my imagination often using the horizon line to bring the abstract towards expressionism, but not too far. I find the challenge is to get the right balance between abstract and realism. I often struggle with a painting, experimenting until I feel I have achieved this balance".
COMMISSIONS
I am happy to take on commissions if you have a particular size and colour scheme in mind. After an initial discussion with you about style, feel, size, colours and aspect ratio, I will do a paint/sketch at a small size (normally A4) before we commit to canvas. I will communicate my progress with you as we progress through the painting. Prices are based on the size of canvas. I would ask for half the payment before we go from small sketch to canvas and the other half after completion and you are totally happy with your painting. I want you to love it.
